Every Employee MUST know their duties at work.
As an employee, you have several key duties to your employer:
1. Readiness and Willingness to Work: You must be prepared and willing to perform your job duties.
2. Obey Lawful and Reasonable Commands: Commands must be within the scope of your employment and genuinely related to your job. For example, a receptionist cannot be lawfully required to perform kitchen duties unless their contract specifies such duties. Commands must also be reasonable, like in the case Australian Telecommunications Commission v Hart (1982), where an order to not wear a caftan was upheld to maintain the company's image.
3. Exercise Due Care and Skill: This includes avoiding conduct that impedes work performance, conflicts with the employer’s interests, or destroys the necessary confidence between employee and employer.
4. Duty to Act in Good Faith: You must not compete with your employer in their business. Using leisure time for non-competing business activities is allowed unless it harms the employer’s business.
5. Faithful Service: You must demonstrate loyalty and avoid conflicts of interest. A notable case involved a professor engaging in an inappropriate relationship, breaching his duty of faithful service, leading to justified dismissal due to potential damage to the university’s reputation.
6. Confidentiality: Both parties must keep information obtained during employment confidential. This includes customer names, preferences, and other sensitive information.
